Recap
Very hot high noon matchup at Palumbo between SIP and Stargazy saw SIP jump to an early lead after Ben Stover deftly touched the ball past Stargazy’s keeper Aaron Meeker from close range. Ten minutes later Noah Hallman put in a cross that Tyler McGowan controlled and found the lower corner from 18 yards out, 2-0 in favor of the Immigrants. Not long after, Brian Kessler, playing in goal for the Immigrants, made a nice save on Greg McKenna’s dangerous cross but Andy Hallman managed to bungle it over the line for an own goal, 2-1. The goal of the match came from Ben Stover’s one-time cross from the corner finished by a nice close-range header by Justin Meltzer, and the half ended 3-1 in favor of the Immigrants.
Early in the second half, Stargazy won a free kick just outside the SIP penalty area, and Dan Starr stepped up and smashed it in with a low drive. Stargazy threatened to tie the match with dangerous runs from the Gregs, McKenna and Katz. But Justin weaved through the defense at the other end and hit a shot, aided by a slight deflection, past Meeker to make it 4-2 in the 60th minute, and just two minutes later Tyler bundled a scrappy Palumbo scramble over the line to make it 5-2. From there on the heat took its toll, and SIP hung on for the win.
Thanks to Ben & Jerry for reffing on a hot afternoon!
